According to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On the National Archival Fond and Archives,” documents of personal origin are one of the sources for the formation of the National Archival Fond.
The Department for Working with Documents of Personal Origin deals with documents of personal fonds that contain information about the periods of development and prosperity of Kazakhstan, as well as about literature, art, and culture.
The Department is responsible for the collection, scientific and technical processing, and promotion of documents belonging to statesmen and public figures, poets and writers, prominent scholars, and figures in the arts through various activities, including commemorative events, documentary exhibitions, meetings, and other initiatives.
Its work includes identifying potential owners of documents of personal origin; verifying, through relevant sources, the biographical information of the future fund-holder and the main stages of their professional and public activities; conducting negotiations with fund owners regarding the transfer of documents to the National Archive; preparing and concluding cooperation agreements; conducting appraisal of the archival value of documents of personal origin; selecting documents to be returned to the fund owner; carrying out the initial systematization of documents; forming provisional files; compiling inventories of documents and files of personal origin; preparing materials for consideration by the Expert Review Commission; and transferring documents for permanent state archival custody.
